About Matt

Mia san mia – we are who we are

Mia san mia is Bavarian German for “we are who we are.” It is one of the mottos of the FC Bayern München Football Club. They are very successful and it is a glib way of saying they can’t not succeed; successful is just what they are.” I am a Bayern fan, but I like the motto for a different reason: I am who I am – … God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for me to do. Ephesians 2:10

What is there to know?

Born and raised in Rochester NY, I currently live in Austin TX. I have also lived in Oswego New York, Los Angeles, California, and Würzburg & Neumarkt in der Oberpfaltz (both in Germany).

I’ve been married to the same wonderful person for nearly 30 years, and we have two grown daughters. We are what happens when New York and California collide and land in Texas. I was born and raised a Missouri Synod Lutheran Christian, and I am a bit of a theological egghead. People like C.S. Lewis, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dr. Joel Biermann are my theological heroes.

Some verses I live by:

15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. 1Peter 3: 15-17

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12: 3-8
